Tourism and Investment Are Reshaping Colombia’s Project Landscape

New hotels, emerging destinations, and an active business travel and events agenda are driving projects that demand more from interior design, specification, and supplier brands. The opportunity lies in connecting design, operations, and identity.

A hotel room is defined long before its first guest arrives. Material durability, lighting, acoustics, furniture, and the relationship with the surrounding environment all respond to the same question: how should the space feel and perform?

These decisions become even more relevant in a growing tourism market. In 2025, Colombia welcomed approximately 4.4 million non-resident international visitors. Since 2010, international hotel groups have added more than 335 hotels and 37,000 rooms across the country, according to ProColombia.

This momentum extends beyond leisure travel. Trade fairs, conventions, corporate meetings, and professional travel activate hotels, restaurants, convention centers, and other gathering spaces. In Medellín, this business dynamic coexists with the city’s cultural and nature-based offerings, increasing demand for projects equipped to host professional communities throughout the year.

More projects, higher expectations

Every hotel opening or renovation brings together developers, operators, architects, interior designers, buyers, specifiers, and suppliers. The challenge lies in aligning concept, budget, technical performance, installation, and the overall user experience.

For design studios and companies specializing in contract projects, the opportunity lies in translating a project concept into viable solutions. The product itself matters, as does its ability to integrate into operations, withstand continuous use, and maintain its quality over time.

Between 2019 and 2025, Antioquia, Bolívar, Cauca, Nariño, and Tolima recorded progress in connectivity, formal tourism infrastructure, and visitor spending. During the same period, the commerce, restaurant, and hotel sectors received more than USD 11 billion in foreign direct investment.

A market that comes together at La Feria

This transformation finds a point of connection at La Feria De Diseño Medellín powered by idd cologne.

From September 10–12, 2026, the trade show will bring together brands, architects, interior designers, developers, buyers, and specifiers from Colombia, Latin America, and the Caribbean at Plaza Mayor.

The exhibition will feature solutions across furniture, kitchens, lighting, technology, interior design, wellness, and outdoor spaces. The Business Matchmaking Round will facilitate meetings with decision-makers, while the 4th Latin American Design and Business Meeting will connect brands with architects, hotel developers, and buyers from across the region.

The direction is clear: tourism growth will generate more projects and raise expectations around performance. La Feria creates the space to understand this evolving market and turn new needs into relationships, decisions, and long-term project opportunities.
